Figure - in ASV = antitype.

It is the water of the flood that is the figure, not baptism. Only a 'substance' can cast a shadow. Noah's salvation was the shadow (accomplished by means of the waters of the flood), as our salvation (achieved through the waters of baptism) is the substance.

Use of 'figure' and 'substance' as seen in Hebrews 9:24:

Holy places on earth.......'the figure'

Heaven..........................the substance.

A 'dress pattern' would be 'the figure' -

the completed dress would be 'the substance.

Even so, Noah's salvation was the 'figure' -

our salvation through being baptized is the 'substance'.

NOWHERE is baptism called 'a figure' or 'a type' - or an outward sign of an inward grace.
